How Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Can Improve Your Mental Health

Training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has many benefits. From increasing your fitness to providing you with the tools to defend yourself. These are some of the more obvious benefits, but what about how BJJ can benefit your mental health?

Your mental health can be just as important as your physical health, and although it is not as as easily identifiable as physical health – it is just as important to keep your mind healthy as it is your body. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can help improve your mental health too.

Exercising Releases Endorphins

Exercising releases endorphins in your brain. These “feel-good” chemicals are released during exercise and physical activity. There is a lot of physical activity when training Jiu Jitsu. Therefore, the more physically active you are, or the more you train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the more endorphins will be released. This will increase your mood, make you feel good and all while training one of the most effective self defence martial arts

Stress Relief

Stress is one of the biggest impacts on peoples mental health. Whether its stress from work, home or another source – letting it build up is not good. You can relieve stress through exercise and training as endorphins are released.

When training on the mats, you will learn to think differently. One of the key aspects of Jiu Jitsu is reaction- reacting to your opponents moves in order to know what you should do next. This mentality can also be applied to life. Using this new perspective, you will learn to react differently and in a more calmer manner when encountering stressful situations.

Socialising With Other BJJ Members

Humans are very social creatures, not socialising with others can be a huge impact on your mental health. Through training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you will meet lots of new people and due to the close contact nature of the sport- it won’t be long until you are friends!
