Why Kids / Teens Who Like Fortnite Should Start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Fortnite has taken the world by storm, mainly fuelled by its extreme popularity with teenagers. Fortnite Battle Royale is a free-to-play multiplayer video game, where your ultimate goal is to be the last player alive. This can be done either by killing off or escaping your opponents. The link has been made between the incredibly popular game and training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Fortnite has been said to increase attention span, perception and cognition in its teen players. This is very similar to the effects Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can have on teenagers. Although it may be surprising, the game and Jiu Jitsu have a lot in common..

Goal Focused

In Fortnite, the player is focused on being the last remaining layer left alive. To do this successfully, they must have a mental game plan or strategy. This planning ahead is also very evident in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Having a plan of action before facing an opponent will increase your chance of winning and not having one will increase your chance of being submitted.  Practical thought out tactics and goals will lead to success in both the virtual and real world.

Fast Reactions

Both Fortnite and Brazilan Jiu itsu require you to react to each action presented to you. In Jiu Jitsu “action and reaction” are fundamental to everything you will learn. Learning to reaction to your opponents actions in a way to benefit you is the principle of the sport. This ability to reaction quickly can make a world of difference when training where there is little time to pause and think of your next move.

Be Resourceful

Both BJJ and Fortnite encourage a resourceful nature. In the game you must be resourceful when finding hiding spots or weapons, while in Jiu Jitsu you must be resourceful in terms of technique. You must adapt to each opponent and also take advantage of each training session with your partner and coaches to ensure future success.

Give Your Best To Succeed

In both Fortnite and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you will need to put in what you want to get out of it. If you go into Fortnite without any plan or energy, you will die in the game. Likewise, if you go to training unmotivated with no intention of learning, you will leave without having gotten the best learning you could have. With both, you need to put in your best work to get the best result from it at he end of the day. Training hard and giving your best motivation on the mats will lead to the best results in the future for you.

Although parents may not want their teenagers playing games all the time, some aspects of Fortnite are positive. These positive affects can be enhanced by training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
